Throughout the duration of the festival, Tanz im August will be showing a diverse selection of live performances and films by Spanish choreographer La Ribot.
A feminist and pioneer of the conceptual dance movement of the 90s – at once challenging and accomplished – she operates at the intersections of contemporary dance, live art, video, and performance art. The retrospective includes her six-hour performance “Laughing Hole” (2006), a selection of her celebrated “Distinguished Pieces” in “Panoramix” (1993–2003), and her 2008 duet with Mathilde Monnier “Gustavia”, along with her most recent series of “Distinguished Pieces”, “Another Distinguée” (2016). An exhibition will present a.o. a selection of her video works from 2002–2014. The retrospective of La Ribot’s work has been made possible by the generous support of Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council.
LA RIBOT
Born in Madrid, La Ribot lives and works in Geneva. Starting during the winds of liberated Spain in the 1980s, La Ribot’s practice has had a profound affect on current views of contemporary dance. Borrowing freely from the vocabularies of theatre, visual arts, performance and film, her work highlights the friction points between these disciplines. For her, dancing is the starting point for multiple experiments rooted in the language of the body. It is also a place of negotiation between, and frequently changes our view of, the different contexts in which the body finds itself whether it be in a gallery or museum, on the stage, or on film. Her live performances have been presented at Tate Modern (London), Theatre de Ville, Centre Pompidou & Festival D’Automne (Paris), Reina Sofia Museum & Soledad Lorenzo Gallery (Madrid), Aichi Triennale (Nagoya, Japan), Fondation Serralves (Porto), Art Unlimited – Art Basel, the S.M.A.K. (Gant), Panorama Festival, (Rio de Janeiro), MUAC (Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City).
Her video works are part of collections at Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid), le Centre Pompidou (Paris), le Centre National des Arts Plastiques-CNAP (Paris) MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León) the Artium (Centro-Museo de arte contemporáneo vasco), the FRAC (Regional Fund for Contemporary Art) Lorraine, La Panera (Lleida), the Fundación Cajasol (Seville) and La Casa Encendida (Madrid).
She has also received numerous awards throughout her career; in 1998 she was nominated to Paul Price Hamlyn Fondation Award for plastic arts. She won the National Dance Award from the Department of Spanish culture in 2000 and in 2015 was decorated with the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in Spain.
